Being a mom today

Like a babycenter mom put it, "What does it mean being a mom of this generation? We have vaccines for our kids, disposable diapers, dozens of jogging strollers to choose from, option of working from home, shelves full of parenting books, partners who cook, clean and watch the kids and mom friends who are only a phone call or an email away.
But flip that coin and life doesn't look that rosy. There's controversy about the vaccines, guilt over sending those disposable diapers to landfill, way too many choices over what you want to buy as a parent, the need to work more hours than we like, the media messages are getting louder, the world in general is moving faster and the pressure is increasing. So whether this is the best times for the moms or worst is one of the hotly debated topics.

To get a better sense of what modern motherhood is like, we have a discussion at our mothers club in the next upcoming meeting.

I personally think this is a better time. The best part of being a mom today is access to information. Even though it may get overwhelming at times, I would much rather have access to it than none at all. I love choices and the fact that I know what effect each choice has. I am sure there are moms who can argue for the cons and it will be interesting to hear the other perspective.

great one,but since i am trying to work more than i 'd like to i am too tired to discuss this now....................dont think these are the best times but we need to make smart choices individually even if it means going against the herd..........not that women are like cattle.......ha!!

I feel lucky to be a mom in this generation. I think we have the best of both worlds.
I dunno what I would do without the internet, online support and discussion groups, disposable diapers (sorry
I am not such a green person!), bottles, microwave sterilizer, etc, etc
At the same time we have access to all the "older" generation ideas/concepts that we were raised with.
Now what is important is what choice you make from all the info you have
I have lot more to say but too much to type :-)

I doubt that anyone is going to vote in favour of the earlier
generation, partly because we do not know fully what it was like to
raise a kid then, and partly because we enjoy our freedom and choices
in this day and age. Who even heard of breast pumps or potty training
seats or diaper genies back then! I agree we have way too many
gadgets/things but most of them are godsends, especially when the mom
is doing the work alone. After coming to India I realize the
importance of a changing table, car seat and high chair to keep the
baby in one place, when there is no other help. The diapers I agree,
not the best way to keep the earth green, but unless there is an
alternative (and I dont mean cloth diapers) - some material that is
eco friendly as well as absorbent - the diapers are not going
anywhere. I cannot imagine running after him to clean his mess!

But I do agree the prev generation had a lot of help, and the child
grew up in a very social envt at home itself, without having to make
countless trips to classes and playgroups.
